Breast Cancer

There is no other cancer that strikes anywhere near as many women, though lung cancer claims more lives.  The Women's Health Initiative reported in 2012 that taking hormones estrogen plus progestin after menopause raised the risk of breast cancer, millions of women tore up prescriptions. There was a significant drop in new breast cnacers after this report.

You are at a higher risk of  breast cancer if you are over 60, have a family history, you have mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2 that are found in families with high rates of breast cancer. Menstrual periods started before age 12 or menopause started after age 55, you were older than 30 when you had your first child, you never give birth, you took hormones estrogen plus progestin after menopause, you have dense breast tissue, you have abnormal breast cells. According to Regina Ziegler of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics at the National Cancer Institute, "The first thing to emphasize about postmenopausal breast cancer is that excess weight increases the risk." After menopase, fat cells, not ovaries, are the main source of estrogen, which promotes the growth of breast cancer.. If you are a breast cancer survivor please help our readers understand how they can battle this terrible disease.
