In the previous post we explored the health benefits of beets- today we are looking at the apple.  Apples are used in the preparation of two of the juices used in our juice cleanse - the Red Radiance and Lemon Twist drinks.

Apples are firstly a great source of flavonoids, such as quercetin. Flavonoids are a class of pigment present in many plants, they usually account for the coloration.  Flavonoid rich foods such as these have many benefits.

For one they can inhibit inflammation and pain of swollen joints.  They are also valued for their synergetic relationship with Vitamin C- they have been shown in scientific tests to boost the positive effects of Vitamin C in the body. Vitamin C is an important anti-oxidant which can prevent coronary heart disease and has been shown to suppress the symptoms of cold and flu.

Apples are also known for their pectin content.  Pectin is a soluble fiber with many known health benefts.  Since it's a gel forming fiber, pectin can lower cholesterol levels.   It is known for its anti-oxidant properties and it is also helpful for our digestive system.  It is often found in remedies for treatment of gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea and dyspepsia. Pectin, in combination with the insoluble fiber contained in apples, helps keep bowel movement regular and healthy preventing diarrhoea and constipation.
